Bot runs for Our World in Data categories
[edit]Hi, I have a request for a bot run that solves several recategorizations, as per a current thread in the village pump. The task I imagine would recategorize ca. 6x70k files in Our World in Data maps by continent and then also the 1x70k files in Our World in Data maps of the world, totalling about 500k files. I have thougt about a rough algorithm,
- for all files in
- if "
" occurs in the file:- take the YYYY as a variable to insert "
" //** a single category for the location and year of the map, compare Our World in Data maps of Asia showing 1948 data **//- if that inserted category does not yet exist: create it with "
" //** (template helpfully provided by User:Reinhard Müller)**//
- if that inserted category does not yet exist: create it with "
- take the file name as the variable
topicnameand stripFile:and, Asia, YYYY.svg(or,Asia,YYYY.svg) from that variable - insert "
" //** for example Category:Our World in Data maps showing Absolute change co2, neatly collecting ~1800 files like this one or ~200 files like this one: a single category for the topic of the map, to have them all easily assembled **//- if that inserted category does not yet exist: create it with "
" //** in most cases, better names should be found, but that cleanup can be handled afterwards manually, where needed **//
- if that inserted category does not yet exist: create it with "
- remove all occurences of "
", """ and ""
- take the YYYY as a variable to insert "
- (else leave the file alone)
- if "
- repeat the same with "Africa", "Europe", ["North America"+"NorthAmerica" mapped onto "North America"], ["South America"+"SouthAmerica" mapped onto "South America"], "Oceania", and "the world".
- for all files in
The files in question are created by a bot already so they are already highly standardized. But I may have overlooked something, so please check my work. Yet, this should work for a majority of the files I have seen, Is that job something that can be done; or would you rather break it up into smaller tasks? --Enyavar (talk) 19:51, 8 March 2026 (UTC)
- User:Mr. Ibrahem can you take care of this and adjust the categorization going forwards to match the above? Let us know if you need any clarifications. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 16:22, 12 March 2026 (UTC)
- This section was apparently archived by accident, this task is yet to be done. I would appreciate someone giving it a a try, or explain why this suggested workflow is not possible, so that we can alter it and redefine the task. Best regards, --Enyavar (talk) 17:15, 20 August 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks for the ping. Will follow up with Ibrahem. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 17:32, 20 August 2026 (UTC)

Categorize photos from Polish Wiki Loves Monuments by administrative unit
[edit]Hello! In Polish WLM there are special prizes for photos from certain administrative units. Therefore, we categorize the photos by voivodeship (i.e. top-level administrative unit). I have prepared a list of files to be added to respective categories at User:Msz2001/WLM2025_categories.
The page has 16 sections, files in each section should be added to the category in the section header. Thanks in advance, Msz2001 (talk) 18:41, 1 October 2025 (UTC)
- @Msz2001: Can you give an example of exactly what category you'd want added to a specific file?
- Also, that page is pretty big and is hard to load. -- Auntof6 (talk) 19:38, 1 October 2025 (UTC)
- @Auntof6 For example, add File:2023-05-13_090837_00535_Wrocław,_archikatedra_św._Jana_Chrzciciela_we_Wrocławiu.jpg to category Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments in Poland – dolnośląskie voivodeship (which is specified in the section header).
- If the page takes much time to load, it might be easier to take the data from the edit view. It loads quickly, especially with syntax highlighting turned off. The structure of the source code of this page is very predictable (either file link preceded by # or category link in header). Msz2001 (talk) 19:54, 1 October 2025 (UTC)
- @Msz2001: Thanks, I understand better now. If I think of something that could help, I'll comment here again. -- Auntof6 (talk) 20:00, 1 October 2025 (UTC)
- User:Cryptic-waveform did something similar before: see Commons:Bots/Work requests/Archive 17#Mass categorization of Wiki Loves Monuments Poland photos. Wikiwerner (talk) 14:57, 25 December 2025 (UTC)
- I have started work on this. The first step was to expand Wiki Loves Monuments 2025 to allow specifying the voivodeship (Revision #1144865823). Note that I'm using the English names of the voivodeships per COM:LANG. I have started to move images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2025 in Kraków by modifying the template. Images that don't have a voivodeship are now added to Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2025 in Poland missing voivodeship categorization. This follows the pattern used for US images. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 15:25, 9 January 2026 (UTC)
- Please don't mess with 10+ year old templates like Wiki Loves Monuments 2012. These templates are per country. If you want to add more categorization, that's fine, just don't edit these templates. Multichill (talk) 20:18, 11 January 2026 (UTC)
- @Multichill Hi. Sorry about that. I think given there are US states in the template it was an honest mistake on the @Cryptic-waveform side. I'll try to prepare our template for the next event and include it in the campaign. If you have suggestions on naming conventions (for tpl and cats) please let me known (here or on my talk page). - Any updates on this? Wikiwerner (talk) 14:03, 4 July 2026 (UTC)
- This task doesn't require a dedicated bot but can be solved using QuickCategories fed with PagePiles. PagePiles can be created by plain text lists of files, so it's just a matter of c&p the lists of files per target category, creating a PagePile for each, and run QuickCategories for each PagePile. If I find some time, I will start this way. Fl.schmitt (talk) 07:43, 19 August 2026 (UTC)
- Piastu has already taken care of this in Template:Wiki Loves Monuments 2025 (one category is added for Poland), and the same was applied to 2026, but... In Poland, voivodeships are very important in the context of monuments, not only because of the prizes mentioned by Msz. All monuments are grouped by voivodeship in the official registers of monuments. The protection of monuments, and to some extent decision-making authority, is also organized at the voivodeship level [1]. So it would be good to have categories that take voivodeships into account. I think categories like that would also make sense because we have a lot of photos for WLM in Poland every year...
- But for now, the template is designed to add a single country-level category. At the moment the plan is to add categories like Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments in Poland – Greater Poland Voivodeship in the upload form. The year can be derived from other data, so we can intersect categories to get similar results. I should probably do it this weekend [2]. Nux (talk··dyskusja) 09:20, 19 August 2026 (UTC)

Categorization of Category:Photographs by Anil Öztas/Lens focal length
[edit]For each category in Category:Photographs by Anil Öztas/Lens focal length, add appropriate lens focal length category. Example: Category:Photographs by Anil Öztas/Lens focal length 84 mm would have added. Thanks. OmegaFallon (talk) 06:28, 5 December 2025 (UTC)
- @A. Öztas: Have you seen this? Maybe this request could be handled by Bienchen? Just asking, best, – Aristeas (talk) 17:26, 2 March 2026 (UTC)
- Or should it be |Öztas, Anil ? Wikiwerner (talk) 10:42, 2 May 2026 (UTC)
- We absolutely do not need separate categories for every single lens focal length a photographer has used. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 21:31, 2 May 2026 (UTC)
- We have got them: see Category:Photographs by lens focal length. So use them, or nominate them for deletion. Wikiwerner (talk) 19:49, 3 June 2026 (UTC)
- Categorizing all photographs by lens local length is plausibly useful. Having a category tree to sort the photos of a single user in that manner is absolutely not useful. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 20:15, 3 June 2026 (UTC)

Subcategories under Category:Abilene_Daily_Reporter_by_volume
[edit]The individual volume subcategories like Category:Abilene_Daily_Reporter_(Abilene,_Tex.),_Vol._9 have too many images and need more subcategories under them for each no. of the volume like Category:Abilene_Daily_Reporter_(Abilene,_Tex.),_Vol._8 has. Is there a bot that can create all the needed subcategories? And then I can use cat-a-lot to check and move all the images into the correct subcategories. Thanks. Add Commons quality assessment to SDC
[edit]Hi, could someone please have a bot assign the correct Commons quality assessment SDC for Featured and Quality images? Most images already have it, and FPC bot is supposed to set it, but some more recent FPs are missing it. This is important because the quality assessment filter on Media Viewer relies on it. Thanks LetmeEditit (talk) 11:33, 20 June 2026 (UTC)
- Can you specify which statements should be added and based on which template? --Ameisenigel (talk) 14:52, 21 June 2026 (UTC)
- Something like: if , add SDC P6731=Q63348049. Also the same thing for QI assessments. An example of an image to be corrected is File:004 Great horned owl under a Pink Ipê tree in Encontro das Águas State Park Photo by Giles Laurent.jpg, it has Commons quality assessment SDC of QI, but not FP. Zaporizhzhia
[edit]Many categories related to en:Zaporizhzhia (category:Zaporizhzhia) are named with another transcription of the city name: Zaporizhia (e.g. category:Streets in Zaporizhia). It would be nice to rename all of them. Sneeuwschaap (talk) 05:37, 8 July 2026 (UTC)
Remove extraneous "I, " in author param of self-cc-by-sa-2.5
[edit]Hi,
There are a lot of erroneous uses of Self which insert "I, " before the author. Could someone please replace {{self|cc-by-sa-2.5|author=I, with {{self|cc-by-sa-2.5|author= in Category:CC-BY-SA-2.5? --Kontributor 2K (talk) 08:32, 3 August 2026 (UTC)
- Incidentally, it looks like the issue also affects CC-BY-SA-4.0, and probably others. --Kontributor 2K (talk) 09:30, 5 August 2026 (UTC)
Replace phonetic symbol "ː" by ":"
[edit]Today I found images with a broken category. The reason was the was the "Triangular colon" "ː" (see: en:Colon (letter)). I replace this in 50 images and 10 categories. But there are many more (maybe over 25000). See this search. Can a bot fix this wrong symbol and replace it with ":". It is hard to catch by eye. For example see this change. --sk (talk) 16:57, 8 August 2026 (UTC)
- @Stefan Kühn: That is not a broken category. I sometimes see the wrong character in use, it needs to be a punctuation colon, ":" (U+003A, ASCII 58 decimal, Alt+58), just like in the beginning of my reply, not a letter colon. Our systems sometimes reject users trying to create categories with the wrong symbol in the gallery namespace and triggering Special:AbuseFilter/122. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 18:20, 8 August 2026 (UTC)
Mass rename
[edit]Can someone please rename a set of files excluding - Image copyright Dan Taylor dan@dantaylorphotography.com- from the title and description (or anywhere else) to avoid COM:ADVERT violation?

Change creator on structured data after username change
[edit]Hello, I recently changed my username and I have many files where the creator name on structured data disagrees with the one on file description. Structured data still has my old username, for example see this file. Is it possible to fix this? --Lasse Keskinen (talk) 18:27, 28 August 2026 (UTC)
Another newspaper needing sorting. The Eagle-Tribune has over 102k images that should be sorted. (1) If a bot could move them into each subcategory by year. (2) If possible, add the category for the specific date. (3) It would also help if the bot also adds and creates a month in Massachusetts by month if it's needed because they will flood the United States category. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 07:01, 15 September 2026 (UTC)
- This is similar to a previous request that has been done by my bot, so I can take this one as well. --Ameisenigel (talk) 15:30, 15 September 2026 (UTC)
La Patria del Friuli subcategorization
[edit]Category:La Patria del Friuli contains 10,922 newspapers (it was daily). The subcategorization per year was initiated, but was done for only 8 years. I ask to complete it. The year is in the filename. --ZandDev (talk) 21:02, 16 September 2026 (UTC)

Hi. Per the CFD, basically:
- Move every category from "power plant" to "power station", preferably with redirect supressed (we can recreate redirect if necessary, on a case-by-case basis)
- Update all files and pages accordingly
The category tree is a bit large. So perhaps we need to somehow map the whole thing first (if needed), and then process batch by batch. Rehman 06:24, 24 September 2026 (UTC)
