"allopathy" category
[edit]Hello,
I’ve just noticed that the “allopathy” category has been created, and I’m having a hard time seeing the point of it.
If the goal is to create a category related to “modern” medical concepts, why not simply call it “modern medicine”? It’s not perfect, but using “allopathy”, a term with negative connotations, and of no medical significance, primarily employed in the marketing of alternative medicine and in India (?), despite or because of its misleading nature, seems to me to offer no added value; quite the opposite, in fact.
Best regards, Auteur i ter (talk) 10:58, 18 September 2026 (UTC)
- Yes, I know it. And that's why I have added a category description. Actually, there are many contexts behind the term "allopathy":
- Originally, it was coined by Samuel Hahnemann who invented homoeopathy, as a pejorative for heroic medicine (superseded medical theory).
- Later, it was employed by alternative medicine practitioners to mean modern medicine, and it is still commonly used.
- In the United States, "allopathic medicine" is used for mainstream medical education (MD) as opposed to osteopathic medical education (DO).
- In India where traditional medicine is significantly popular, "allopathy" is widely understood to mean modern medicine.

- Thank you for your response. However, this does not answer the main question, which is: What is the point of creating a category using a misleading term that has many different and contradictory meanings?
- And beyond that, what justifies limiting the category specifically to one proposed meaning of “allopathy” while disregarding all the others? Auteur i ter (talk) 12:33, 18 September 2026 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) It's tricky. There are some things that are part of modern medicine that are not allopathic: pretty much anything based in diet and nutrition; arguably vaccines; osteopathy, as Sbb1413 mentons. I suspect there is quite a bit more, but those leap to mind. I'm not taking any side on whether it is a useful category, though offhand this seems more like an ontological distinction than something useful to end users trying to find media. @Sbb1413, could you explain the scenario where this is likely to be useful to an end user (or even a contributor)? - Jmabel ! talk 08:15, 19 September 2026 (UTC)
- Of course it's tricky: how could a term that has been used for centuries to trick, mislead, and misinform people by making them believe that medicine is something it is not possibly not be tricky? It has been the subject of criticism since at least 1846.
- It seems to me that several problems arise, each of which, in my view, is sufficient to render the creation of such a category inappropriate:
- - the pejorative (its inventor describes it as criminal, among other things, and it is still widely used as a derogatory term) and misleading nature of the term (one could add, beyond its lack of medical meaning, its absurdity within the very discipline it is supposed to denote)
- - its lack of clear definition (a corollary of its misleading nature), which will make it difficult to use for categorization while maintaining a neutral point of view or even basic consistency)
- That is why I am starting this discussion—to see if there is a sufficient reason that outweighs these issues, which I consider critical. Auteur i ter (talk) 16:25, 19 September 2026 (UTC)

Hello, I noticed in Module:Country label/data you have changes some of the "type" parameters from "country" to "ustate" (e.g. this diff). This has caused some errors in the category names such as in Category:Vehicles in Taiwan, as it got categorize to Category:Vehicles by ustate of location. Can you fix this error? Thanks. Done — I have fixed it via {{Topic by country}}. I did not notice it while trying to introduce a country type. Sbb1413 (he) (talk • contribs • uploads) 12:33, 30 September 2026 (UTC)
