Invitation to the Wikimedia Commons Pre-Conference at the Wikimania 2026

Hello Marcus Cyron,

I want to invite you to participate at our Wikimedia Commons Pre-Conference at the Wikimania in Paris on July 21. If you want to join the pre-conference, please sign up on this page until July 7. Participation at the pre-conference is also possible without a ticket for the Wikimania. If you sign up before the deadline on July 7, you will get free access to the pre-conference day. Unfortunately, online participation will not be possible.

If you have something you want to present or you want to talk about at the pre-conference, please add it here, also until July 7.

There is also a service announcement for all photographers coming to Paris: Unfortunately, France has no freedom of panorama at all. Therefore, Commons does not accept photos of modern buildings, public art or light installations at night. Read more about the problem here.

Besides the invitation to our pre-conference, there is another announcement: We updated the membership list of the Commons Photographers User Group. The membership list is much smaller now and based on a template. This allows us to easily create message lists and statistics. Please have a look at your entry in the list and update it if needed.

Requesting source for File:Thomas fearnley turner fernisserer.jpg

Hello, I am currently FACing en:Regulus (Turner), and learned that a file used on that page, File:Thomas fearnley turner fernisserer.jpg, did not have a listed source. While I have found where the older, lower resolution image comes from, I cannot seem to identify the source of the current version. As you are the person who uploaded the current version of the file, I was wondering if you still knew the source where it came from, so it can be put on the page. Citrus🍋 20:00, 20 August 2026 (UTC)

Marina JHC file

Hello, I heard that you rename files, and I wanted to know why you didn't rename Marina JHC file. "why do you shout at us?" doesn't seem like a valid reason to me, and I'd like that file to be renamed to match the other files on the same page. KakuLogia+ (talk) 10:14, 21 August 2026 (UTC)

@Marcus Cyron: I think you misunderstood what I said, but I'll explain the context. The overwhelming majority of images have their names in all caps, and this has become the standard for election-related images, whose naming convention was agreed upon 2 years ago. Thank you so much for clearing up after me here, my apologies for creating extra work! I'm afraid there's this too. Is there a better way of dealing with this sort of problem (redirect blocking a move) if it ever arises again? Do we have something here similar to the WP:G6, housekeeping, tag on Wikipedia? Commons Photographers User Group: Vote on the rules for membership

Hello Marcus Cyron,

you are listed as a member of the Commons Photographers User Group. We are happy that we have over 340 people listed as our members. But we also want to implement rules on when inactive users are removed from the membership list, to get a realistic number of our community size.

The suggested rule is that members need one edit per year to stay a member and at least one upload to Commons to become a member.

Please vote on this suggestion here until September 24.

On July 21, we had our first Wikimedia Commons pre-conference with over 40 participants as part of the Wikimania in Paris. You can have a look at the program and the slides here.
