However, depending on where you plan to move, the transfer process can sometimes be a bit more time-consuming.<\/p>\n

Become Familiar with National and State Nursing Requirements<\/h3>\n

Registered nurses working in the following locations are required by law to have a valid nursing license:<\/em><\/p>\n

\u2022 The United States
\n\u2022 The District of Columbia

If you\u2019re moving to a compact state, the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) will allow you to practice in your new state without re-taking the NCLEX exam or obtaining a new certification. Currently, thirty states participate in the NLC, and eight others are in the process of becoming compact states.<\/p>\n

\n\u2022 You must hold an active RN license, and your license must be in good standing

Many non-compact states are concerned about adequate training and quality of care, so they choose to set their own nursing standards.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re in the process of moving to a non-compact state, you\u2019ll need to research your new state\u2019s additional requirements. You\u2019ll need to apply for endorsement in your new state, and this process can sometimes take months from start to finish. \n\u2022 Pay the required fees
\n\u2022 Declare your new state as your primary state of residency<\/p>\n

Once you\u2019ve moved to the new state, you\u2019ll be able to practice on your old license for between 30 and 90 days, depending on state rules. Then, you must obtain a new compact license that reflects your current state of residency. After this, your old one will be inactivated.<\/p>\n
